Taita-Taveta County provides access to some of Kenya’s largest, least-crowded wilderness areas — notably Tsavo East and Tsavo West National Parks and the scenic Chyulu Hills. Tsavo’s sweeping savannahs, volcanic landscapes and iconic red-dust elephants create a rugged safari experience distinct from the more manicured Mara circuit. The parks are enormous and varied, featuring Mudanda Rock, Yatta Plateau, volcanic caves, seasonal rivers and expansive plains where large concentrations of elephants, buffalo and other big game roam.
Top attractions include Mudanda Rock and its panoramic views, Yatta Plateau (the world’s longest lava flow), the Mzima Springs freshwater pools (in Tsavo West), red-dust elephants and extensive birdlife. The nearby Chyulu Hills provide hiking, horseback riding and dramatic viewpoints toward Amboseli and Kilimanjaro on clear days. For photographers and travellers who want solitude and raw landscapes, Tsavo’s lesser-visited roads and remote camps are ideal.
Travel tips: Tsavo is remote — plan longer transfer times and consider internal flights where available. Roads inside the parks can be challenging in the rains; 4×4 vehicles and experienced guides improve safety and wildlife sightings. Combine Tsavo with coastal Mombasa or Diani for a beach-and-wilderness itinerary. Conservation projects and community tourism programs operate in the region; choosing reputable operators helps local livelihoods and anti-poaching efforts.
